The Antelope Valley Treasure Hunters Society

This is a great group of 80 treasure hunting enthusiasts who made me feel welcome the moment I showed up for their monthly meeting, which is held in the Parkview School in Lancaster, California on the first Monday of every month at 7 in the evening.

This group maintains an extensive prospecting claim, has a monthly news letter, frequent group outings, and social events. The highlight of each monthly meeting is the display of everyone's finds from the previous month and voting to see who gets awarded a silver dime for best gold, best silver, most unique object, best American coin, best foreign coin, and best overall find.

Don't be fooled by the abundance of gray hair, this is one fired-up mob of detectorists!

A typical meeting attended by 30 of the 80 members.

Many members display their best finds of the month, which are then voted on by the members to decide who had the best gold, best silver, best US coin, best foriegn coin, most unique, and best overall.

There's often a raffle. During this meeting a won an 1880 Morgan dollar!

The January meeting also featured a dessert table where everyone brought in their favorite snack.

Winners of the Best Finds of the Month are awarded silver coins. Here, Bruce Barron (right) receives his award for the best gold: 0.4 grams dry washed from the club's claim using a dry washer he designed and built himself.
